  What do you mean by Galaxy?

• The word Galaxy was derived from the Greek word 'galaxias' which means 'Milky' that refers to our Milky Way Galaxy. 
•  A Galaxy is a gravitationally bound system of trillions of stars, compact stars, interstellar gas, dust clouds, dark matter, and black holes at their center.

 The 5 most Mysterious Galaxies in the Universe :

 

1. The Magellenic Cloud :

      The Magellanic Cloud is also known as Magellanic System or Nubeculae magellani. This galaxy is present in the southern celestial hemisphere (the south part of the celestial equator of the sphere). It is a dwarf(small or distinct which contains less amount of stars than the Milky Way) and an irregular-shaped galaxy that does not have a distinct regular shape that is neither spherical nor elliptical. This galaxy is combinatory of two galaxies i.e

  

        A. Large Magellanic Cloud(LMC):

• Also called Nubecullar Major.
• Stables at a distance of approximately 160000 light-years than The Milky Way.  
• It is the second or third closest galaxy of The Milky Way, after the Sagittarius Dwarf Spheroidal.
• The diameter of LMC is about  14,000 light-years( 4.3 kpcs).

        B. Small Magellanic Cloud(SMC):

• SMC is called Nubecular Minor.
• Its diameter is about 7,000 light-years.
• It has a total mass of approximately 7 billion solar masses (the standard unit of mass in astronomy is about 2* 10^30).
• SMC is among the nearest intergalactic neighbor of the Milky Way and we may see it with the naked eye.

        2. NGC 1277 :

• It is a  Lenticular Galaxy ( the shape of the galaxies, between spiral and elliptical shapes) present in the constellation(an area on the celestial sphere in which a group of visible stars forms a perceived pattern or outline like any animal )  of  Perseus ( type of constellation).
• It is present 220 million light-years away from our galaxy.
• It is a member of the Perseus cluster (a structure where many galaxies are bound together by their gravity with their typical masses). 
• The NGC 1277 has been called a "relic of the early Universe" because all of its stars appear to have formed about 12 billion years ago but on the other hand the Big Bang is thought to have happened 13.8 billion years ago.
• Its appearance and look make an astonishment to the eye. Just have a look below.

     3. NGC 1316 :

• NGC 1316 is also known as Fornax A which is also a Lenticular Galaxy.
• It is about 60 million light-years away from our Galaxy present in the constellation  Fornax (It is a constellation in the southern celestial hemisphere).

 4. NGC 2207 and IC 2163 :

• The NGC 2207 and IC 2163 are two galaxies that collided with each other and formed a colliding Spiral galaxy ( these are named by their spiral structure that extends from the center to the galactic disc).
• These Galaxies are about 80 million light-years away and settle in Canis Major's constellation.
• Both galaxies are discovered by John Herschel in 1835. In this way, you can imagine the discoveries of the Galaxies.
• The NGC 2207 is the larger one in comparison to the IC 2163. 
• These two Galaxies resemble An Eye in space because of their barred, intermediate spiral shape. They superimposed each other to give a precious view.
• Both contain a vast amount of dust and gas.

   5. Messier 83 or M83 :

• M83 is one of the most eye-catching galaxies that you have ever seen, also this one is my favorite for its glance. It is known as Southern Pinwheel Galaxy or NGC 5236. Its nickname Pinwheel derives from its resemblance to the Pinwheel Galaxy 
• It is a barred spiral galaxy( it is a spiral galaxy with a central bar-shaped structure composed of stars) and approximately 15 million light-years away from the constellation borders of Hydra and Centaurus.
• It was discovered by Nicolas Louis de Lacaille on 23 February 1752 at the Cape of Good Hope.
